Confirm the species before copying a care sheet
Use the name Furcifer oustaleti, not only “giant chameleon.” The Reptile Database recognises it as a species in Chamaeleonidae and identifies Furcifer verrucosus as a similar species. A peer-reviewed phylogeographic study found that the two are morphologically similar and have often been misidentified in the field. That makes a photograph, colour or shop label an unsafe foundation for care.
Ask for the scientific name, sex if reliably determined, origin and traceable acquisition records. Keep those records with veterinary notes. If identity remains uncertain, obtain an assessment from a veterinarian or qualified taxonomic specialist before applying a detailed husbandry schedule. A plan written for another chameleon is not automatically transferable.
Plan a branch system at full adult scale
Oustalet's chameleon is among the world's largest chameleons. The California Academy of Sciences describes the species as likely the longest and notes its prehensile tail, solitary behaviour and use of branches. A juvenile-sized display therefore cannot be treated as the finished habitat. Draw the adult's route through the enclosure before selecting its shell.
Provide secure horizontal and angled branches with more than one route between sheltered positions, feeding access and environmental zones. The animal should be able to turn, extend, climb and withdraw without repeatedly contacting the enclosure walls or crossing an exposed floor. Anchor every support against the adult load, keep hot surfaces unreachable and preserve keeper access without dismantling the main route. Plan for one animal unless a specialist has defined a controlled breeding arrangement.
Create choices, then measure them
Do not set heat or light from a universal number on this page. The correct targets need a species-specific veterinary brief, the individual animal and the installed equipment. Place a guarded, thermostatically controlled heat source toward one part of the habitat so the animal can move away. Measure temperatures at occupied perches and in the cooler refuge over a complete daily cycle.
As a diurnal lizard, the animal needs a properly designed ultraviolet-lighting plan. Follow the lamp manufacturer’s distance and replacement instructions, account for mesh or glazing between lamp and animal, and verify output at the usable perch when suitable measuring equipment and expertise are available. Record readings after lamp, branch or room changes rather than assuming the label describes exposure inside the enclosure.
Keep humidity compatible with moving air
The Merck Veterinary Manual warns that reducing ventilation to hold heat or humidity can contribute to skin and respiratory disease. A mesh lid alone may still ventilate poorly. Design a clear air path through the occupied volume and assess it alongside temperature and humidity. Condensation, persistently wet surfaces or stagnant pockets are reasons to review airflow and water delivery, not to hide them behind more décor.
True chameleons commonly drink droplets from leaves and furnishings. Build misting or dripping around clean delivery, complete drainage and periods when surfaces can dry. Observe whether the individual drinks and track routine output, appetite and body condition with veterinary guidance. Clean delivery lines and catchment areas on a written schedule. Hydration cannot be confirmed from a humidity reading alone.
Choose observation over routine handling
The species is described as largely sedentary and solitary. Design routine feeding, cleaning and inspection so they do not require capture. Watch posture, climbing, use of thermal and light zones, drinking and responses to the keeper from outside the enclosure. Handling is a transport or clinical tool when necessary, not the main way to interact with the animal.
Before acquisition, check the rules where the animal will be kept and moved. The official CITES checklist places Furcifer oustaleti in Appendix II, which regulates international trade but does not by itself answer local ownership law. Verify permits and provenance, prefer a fully traceable lawful source and reject incomplete paperwork. Confirm an experienced exotic-animal veterinarian in advance; illness, injury or rapid decline requires individual assessment rather than online diagnosis.
