Using the output

A calculation is one line in the planning record.

The calculator answers a deliberately narrow question. Keep the inputs, formula and unit beside the result, then reconnect that result to footprint, displacement, operating level and maintenance.

Inputs

Measure the space that will actually be occupied

Use internal dimensions taken at the relevant surfaces, not a catalogue label or the outside of a cabinet. Record the unit beside every value and note any sloped wall, curved panel, raised floor or irregular section that the rectangular formula cannot represent. Repeating a measurement is more useful than entering extra decimal places from an uncertain tape position. If the shape is complex, divide it into understandable sections or use a method designed for that geometry.

Keep gross volume separate from operating volume

A rectangular result describes the full measured box. Substrate, hardscape, air gaps, filters, pipework and a lower water line reduce what is available in operation. The calculator does not estimate those displacements and does not convert volume into a stocking or welfare answer. Label the gross figure clearly, then document how the finished system changes it. Equipment decisions should use the relevant operating conditions and the manufacturer’s actual performance information.

Carry the result into the system drawing

Write the number on the same plan that shows footprint, levels, drainage, service access and equipment positions. That prevents a precise-looking output from replacing the spatial questions it cannot answer. Recalculate after dimensions or operating levels change and keep the earlier assumption visible. The useful output is not merely a number on screen. It is a traceable input to a larger habitat decision that can be checked by another person.
