Do not buy a family name
FishBase lists more than thirty species in the hawkfish family Cirrhitidae, with substantial differences in adult length and distribution. A dwarf hawkfish, Cirrhitichthys falco, is not the same planning problem as a much larger member of the family. Common labels such as flame, longnose, spotted or giant must be connected to a scientific name before any suitability claim is made.
Ask the supplier for the accepted name, collection location, capture or breeding method, arrival date and feeding history. Compare body markings and records with FishBase, the World Register of Marine Species or a museum fish database. Do not substitute the name of a similar photograph. If identification remains uncertain, plan for neither the smallest adult nor the mildest behaviour.
Build around perching and access
Hawkfishes have thickened lower pectoral rays used for resting on the bottom, and many species occupy rocks or corals. Cirrhitichthys falco, for example, is documented around rich coral growth and rests near coral heads. Translate that natural history into stable, fish-safe perching and observation points, with clear routes between them. Do not balance loose rock in a way that cleaning or a resting fish can undermine.
Usable space depends on the identified adult, territorial use and the shape of the aquascape. A nominal water volume cannot describe sight lines, retreat access or feeding stations. Sketch the adult body and movement route, subtract structures, and keep enough open access for inspection and capture. The mature system must already support the fish at adult scale.
Treat compatibility as a prey audit
FishBase describes hawkfishes as feeding on small crustaceans and fishes. That family-level natural history makes small mobile animals a compatibility concern, but it does not predict every encounter. Inventory ornamental shrimp, crabs, small fish and other likely prey by adult and current size. Consider animals that emerge after lights out as well as those visible during feeding.
“Reef safe” is too broad to settle the decision. A fish may leave sessile corals untouched while consuming a valued shrimp or intimidating another perch-using fish. Do not add the hawkfish as an experiment whose failure requires dismantling the reef. If losing an existing animal is unacceptable or removal cannot be performed safely, choose another species.
Quarantine for evidence, not only time
Merck Veterinary Manual advises that quarantine protects an established collection and permits close observation, acclimation and diagnostic work. Use an independent, cycled system with dedicated equipment and water-quality records. Record breathing, posture, skin and fin condition, waste and feeding response. Ask an aquatic veterinarian to set the duration and any tests or treatment rather than medicating automatically.
Confirm that the fish accepts an appropriate diet before display transfer. Match food type and delivery to the identified species and its health rather than relying on a universal “meaty foods” instruction. Avoid overfeeding the whole system to reach one sedentary fish. A feeding station or targeted method must not deprive other animals or drive nutrient control beyond the system’s capacity.
Source the fish with an exit plan
Ask how and where the fish was collected and what mortality occurred before sale. Prefer a traceable supplier that can identify the species and explain handling. Check current wildlife, protected-area, import and possession rules at origin and destination. The fact that a species is absent from CITES does not establish that collection was lawful or low impact.
Proceed only when identity, adult habitat, compatibility, quarantine, feeding, water-quality capacity and permanent placement are resolved. Never release a marine aquarium fish. If the display community contains vulnerable small fish or crustaceans, the responsible conclusion may be that a hawkfish does not belong in it.
